The Sentinel of the Cauldron
Amidst the sulfurous mists of Dagnor's Cauldron, a new presence has emerged. The gnome Fizzlethorpe stands as a lone sentinel against the encroaching tide of nightmare. His eyes, wide with the reflection of things no mortal should see, watch the gates of Unrest with grim obsession.
Whispers among the local scouts suggest that Fizzlethorpe is more than a mere eccentric. He speaks of a Ritual of the Faceless: a cataclysmic event being orchestrated within the mansion's walls. He carries with him the knowledge of the Awakened Soulstones, which are the only vessels capable of containing the volatile essence of the Plane of Fear. To those brave enough to listen, he offers a desperate gambit to sever the link before the Avatar of Fear fully manifests.
The Sallowscale Pilgrimage
Ancient prophecies within the ruins of Sebilis spoke of a land where fear itself was etched into the soil. Following these dark portents, Ghaz Sallowscale, an Undead Iksar Necromancer, crossed the Great Ocean to Faydwer. He did not seek the lush forests, but the singular darkness of the Estate of Unrest.
Ghaz recognized that the estate’s history was the perfect catalyst for a grand summoning. Having transcended his mortal coil to become a skeleton of eternal focus, he harvests the psychic agony of the tormented dead. Down in the lightless pits of the basement, Ghaz works tirelessly to weave a tapestry of souls that will act as a beacon for his lord, Cazic Thule.
The Effigy of Fear
The ritual has begun to take a physical and terrifying shape. Perched upon the balcony overlooking the haunted grounds stands the Effigy of Fear. This is no mere statue: it is a conduit of pure and unadulterated terror. It pulsates with a rhythmic, sickening light that echoes the heartbeat of the Plane of Fear itself.
Ghaz Sallowscale uses this Effigy to stabilize the thin veil between worlds. It acts as the final lock on the door to the abyss. Only those who possess the Phylactery of the Apostate and an Awakened Soulstone can hope to challenge the Effigy. To disturb it is to invite the direct gaze of the Faceless, potentially summoning a manifestation of dread that could shatter the very foundations of Faydwer.
The Baron of Dread
To secure the yard and ensure the ritual remains undisturbed, Ghaz summoned a lieutenant from the depths of the abyss: the Baron of Dread. This zombie warlord has claimed the gazebo as his throne of rot, transforming the yard into a killing field for any who dare approach the mansion.
The Baron is the physical manifestation of the Estate's fortification. He directs the Tormented Dead with a cold and extra-planar efficiency. He is not merely a guardian; he is a collector of spirits. Each adventurer who falls beneath his blade provides more ichor to fuel the Effigy above. Together, this triad of darkness ensures that the screams in Dagnor's Cauldron will never truly fall silent, and the empire of fear will have its foothold in the land of the living.
